Profile & Notifications

Editing your profile

Your Unpack profile contains the information that other team members see when they interact with you on the platform. You can edit your profile at any time from your account settings.

Accessing your profile

  1. Click your avatar in the top-right corner of the navigation bar.
  2. Select Profile Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. Update any of the fields described below.
  4. Click Save Changes to apply your updates.

Profile fields

The following fields are available on your profile. All fields except email are optional, but filling them out helps your team members identify you across the platform.

  • Display name — The name shown to other team members in retrospectives, standups, and action item assignments. This does not need to match your legal name. Choose whatever your team knows you by.
  • Email address — Your primary email address, used for login, notifications, and invitations. Changing your email requires verification of the new address via a confirmation link.
  • Job title — An optional field displayed on your profile card. Useful for larger organizations where team members may not know each other's roles or functions.
  • Timezone — Your local timezone. This affects how timestamps are displayed throughout the app and how scheduled reminders and notifications are timed relative to your working hours.

If you signed up using Google OAuth, your display name and email are initially synced from your Google account. You can change them in Unpack at any time without affecting your Google account. Future Google logins will continue to work with your original Google email.

Avatar management

Your avatar appears next to your name throughout Unpack, including in retrospective cards (when you choose to identify yourself), action item assignments, team member lists, and the navigation bar.

Uploading a custom avatar

  1. Go to Profile Settings.
  2. Click the avatar image or the Change Avatar button beneath it.
  3. Select an image file from your device. Supported formats are JPG, PNG, and WebP. Maximum file size is 5 MB.
  4. Use the crop and position tool to frame your image as desired.
  5. Click Save to upload the new avatar.

The uploaded image is resized and optimized automatically. It will appear across all organizations and teams you belong to.

Default avatars

If you do not upload a custom avatar, Unpack generates a default avatar using your initials and a background color derived from your display name. This ensures that every user has a visually distinct identifier even without uploading a photo.

If you signed in with Google OAuth, your Google profile picture is used as your initial avatar. You can replace it with a custom upload at any time from the profile settings page.

Removing your avatar

To remove a custom avatar and revert to the default initials-based avatar, go to Profile Settings, click your avatar image, and select Remove Avatar. The change takes effect immediately across all teams.

Notification preferences

Unpack sends notifications to keep you informed about retrospective activity, action item updates, and team events. You have full control over which notifications you receive and how they are delivered.

Notification channels

Notifications can be delivered through the following channels. Each notification type can be independently enabled or disabled per channel.

  • Email — Notifications delivered to your registered email address. These include retro invitations, action item reminders, and weekly summaries. Email notifications are useful for staying informed when you are not actively using Unpack.
  • In-app — Notifications displayed in the bell icon menu within the Unpack navigation bar. These are delivered in real time and include activity during live retrospective sessions, such as phase changes and new action item assignments.
  • Slack — If your organization has the Slack integration enabled, you can opt in to receiving personal notifications via Slack direct message. This is in addition to any channel-level notifications configured by your organization admin.

Configuring your preferences

  1. Go to Profile Settings and select the Notifications tab.
  2. For each notification type listed below, toggle the channels you want active (email, in-app, Slack).
  3. Click Save Preferences to apply your changes.

Notification types

You can independently control each of the following notification categories. This lets you receive the updates that matter most to you while filtering out the rest.

  • Retro invitations — Notified when a new retrospective is created for a team you belong to. Includes the retro name, template, and scheduled time.
  • Retro starting — Notified when a retrospective moves from the draft phase to check-in, indicating that the session is now live.
  • Action item assigned — Notified when an action item is assigned to you during the commit phase or via carry-over.
  • Action item due — A reminder sent before an action item's due date. You can configure the lead time: 1 day before, 3 days before, or 1 week before.
  • Retro summary — A summary of the retrospective outcomes, including themes, votes, and action items, sent after the session is closed.
  • Weekly digest — A weekly summary of your open action items, upcoming retrospectives, and recent team activity. Sent on Monday mornings in your configured timezone.
  • Standup reminders — Reminders to complete your async standup submission, if your team uses this feature. Timing is based on your team's configured standup schedule.

If you find notifications overwhelming, start by enabling only "Action item assigned" and "Weekly digest." These two categories provide the essential information without creating noise. You can always enable additional types later as needed.

Deleting your account

If you need to permanently delete your Unpack account, you can do so from your profile settings. Account deletion is irreversible, so please review the following information carefully before proceeding.

Before you delete

Take the following steps before initiating account deletion to ensure a smooth transition for your teams.

  • Organization ownership — If you are the owner of an organization, you must transfer ownership to another member before you can delete your account. Go to Organization Settings, find the Ownership section, and select a new owner.
  • Open action items — Action items currently assigned to you will be unassigned upon deletion. Consider reassigning them to another team member before deleting your account to maintain accountability.
  • Retrospective contributions — Your cards, votes, and comments will be preserved in their respective retrospectives but will be permanently anonymized. Your name will be removed from all historical records, and your contributions will become indistinguishable from other anonymous cards.

Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. All personal data associated with your account will be removed in accordance with our privacy policy. If you want to take a break from Unpack instead, consider simply logging out rather than deleting your account entirely.

How to delete your account

  1. Go to Profile Settings.
  2. Scroll to the Danger Zone section at the bottom of the page and click Delete Account.
  3. Read the confirmation dialog carefully. It explains what data will be permanently removed and what will be anonymized.
  4. Type your email address in the confirmation field to verify your intent.
  5. Click Permanently Delete Account.

After deletion, you will be signed out immediately and redirected to the Unpack home page. A confirmation email will be sent to your registered email address as a record of the deletion. If you did not initiate the deletion, contact support@unpack.dev immediately.
